Music fine-tunes Ateneo curriculum

“WE ARE Ateneans. As such, it is inherent to us to be lovers of humanities and the arts. Music naturally feeds our soul and enlivens our humanity.” Thus said by outgoing Junior High School Associate Principal Dr. Herman Lagon on the integration of Music in the school’s curriculum.

Henceforth, Renan Flores, a pianist and a voice coach, was now tasked to teach Music to the students of Grades 7-9. He will teach Philippine Music to Grade 7 and Southeast Asian to Grade 8. Latin American, African, and Central Asian Music will be the theme of Grade 9.

Flores is a graduate of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union, Pangasinan and has been teaching music to elementary and high school students for years. As a voice coach, he has already lead his mentees win in various national and international competitions.

“I am so excited and blessed of being accepted to teach music in this prestigious school,” Flores said, adding, “I am inspired to squeeze out the best of what our talented Ateneans have for I’m very sure that music forms part of their DNA.”

Flores, alongside with other probationary teachers of the school, attended the Ignite (Ignatian teachers training and orientation) and has undergone InSeT (In-Service Training) last summer. This 7-week seminar-workshop and training includes subject planning that covers preparation of curriculum offering, lesson planning, and designing of assessment tolls and performance tasks for the upcoming school year.

Part of the school’s plan is to put up a Music Room with additional music-related equipment in the near future. This is on top of the organ, drum set, and guitar that the school has for the subject. Currently, Flores is conducting his music classes at the Audio Visual Room in the ground floor of the school.

To note, a choral composed of younger high school singers was already formed by Flores. They have already received accolades after performing in the Parents’ Orientation for Grade 7 and in the re-launching of the Blue Spoon Program of the school./Ripples by: Samantha Ysabel Co
